Fatal scoping error from the twilight zone

I can reproduce the problem, but I think the only solution is to add a
section to the ref manual explaining that only the letters a, e, f, i,
m, n, q, u, v, and y are legal in that position.  In other words, I'm
still trying to figure out what is happening.
