socketmodule is linked thusly:

gcc -shared build/temp.linux-i686-2.1/socketmodule.o -L/usr/local/lib -lssl -lcrypto -o build/lib.linux-i686-2.1/_socket.so

The SSL package is:

    libssl09-dev 0.9.4-5

I've no time to dig into the details right now but I should have
time tonight.  I will be gone on holiday tomorrow.
