Yup, we used that program back in my KSR days!  Looks like the source code
has grown by a factor of ~6 since then.  One of the most recent change log
entries is scary:

   5.1  Length 88739; Sep 1998
	...
	Speeded up search for max char (first 32 bit char machine
      turned up...)

The Python source code is going to be delighted with 32-bit chars.
