I haven't researched this to the bottom, but based on the email exchange, it seems that keeping getreadbuf and special-casing s# for Unicode objects makes the most sense. That makes the 's' and 's#' more similar. Note that 'z#' should also be fixed. I believe that SRE uses PyObject_AsReadBuffer() so that it can work with arrays of shorts as well (when shorts are two chars).
