On the Linux systems from which I track the CVS repository, I run cvs 1.10.6, 1.10.7 and 1.10.8 and haven't had seen the problem you describe. I checked six different Python trees on four different machines for evidence of Lib/newimp.py. One of the trees still references cvs.python.org and hasn't been updated since September 4, 1999. Even it doesn't have a Lib/newimp.py file. I believe the demise of Lib/newimp.py predates the creation of the SourceForge CVS repository by quite awhile. You might try executing cvs checkout in a fresh directory and compare that with your problematic tree. Skip
