I don't know if this is related, exactly, but there is some kind of
problem with the current test.

When I run make test, I see:

test test_sre crashed -- exceptions.SyntaxError : inconsistent use of tabs and spaces in indentation

tabnanny thinks test_sre.py is fine, so I'm not sure what the problem
is.
