Come one, come all! Our next meeting for Wikimedia NYC is Sunday November 15 at Columbia University. This is a meeting for volunteers to the projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, and everyone else too, who has ever looked at Wikipedia and wondered what's going on behind it. One big topic of discussion, out of many, will be preparing for our ongoing 'Wikipedia at the Library' classes in planning for the Wireless Harlem nonprofit (Spanish-speaking volunteers could help here!) and at the Brooklyn Public Library. Other topics will include the particular problems posed by Wikipedia articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements such as the article 'Controversies related to prevalence of Jews in leadership roles in Hollywood', and discussing other issues relevant to Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. We welcome all guests. If you support open education and free culture, we are your people. If you have a project you want to work on with us, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted. If you want someone to give a talk or teach a class with an inside view of Wikipedia, meet your volunteers. And if you just have any questions, we'd be glad to try to answer them. Remember, the agenda here is up to you! I encourage anyone who is interested to sign up to give a presentation or suggest a topic for general discussion at our wikimeetup page (given below). ---Meeting details--- 2:30 PM - 5:00PM: Room 1402 Pupin Hall, Columbia University. Take the elevator to the 13th floor and then walk up one flight of stairs. Meeting to be held in the library at the east end of the hall. 5:00 PM onwards: Meetup at Pupin Hall, and then walk together to either the Chinese restaurant Columbia Cottage, or the Kosher Moroccan restaurant Cafe Nana (help us decide!). Page on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC You can officially 'sign up' at that page, and please add your ideas to the agenda! It ain't easy when New York is a summer festival that doesn't quit when the leaves fall off. Yesterday I had to forego a group bike ride to Westchester, and most weekends there are photography shows, astronomy meetings, history lectures or other events that force me to choose. NYC cycling interests hold a "bicycle summit" every February to minimize schedule conflicts among events such as the [[Five Boro Bike Tour]] and the hundred mile rides of [[Transportation Alternatives]]. Small or weekday events such as this Thursday's ride to the Tibetan museum in Staten Island, probably attracting only a dozen people, are not included. Perhaps a similar coordination among New York's non commercial Web interests would be productive. Yesterday we heard from a new user of Commons, coming from a photography background rather than a Wikipedia background, who is having trouble with our admittedly arcane upload procedures. Meanwhile my Wiki background makes Commons easy; it's just that I seldom understand how to produce a photo good enough to be worth giving away for free. Darn it, we need peple like that. People like me can teach them our methods and hope to get hints from their years of experience in the art of picture making. There ought to be a specialized meeting, preferably in an Internet cafe or other place that can give good connections and the ability to show each other how to handle things. ____________________________________________________________ Doctorate Degrees Online Boost your career with an online doctoral degree.
