Le traitement de chats par la 5-hydroxydopamine (5-HDA), une amine agissant comme «faux» transmetteur sympathique, conduit à l'accumulation d'un matériel très osmiophile dans les vésicules des terminaisons sympathiques. Il a pu être démontré que ce matériel osmiophile représente principalement la 5-HDA. En même temps la teneur de la noradrénaline est fortement diminuée. Les vésicules des terminaisons nerveuses cholinergiques restent vides.
