Die „Schnepfenralle“Rhynchaeites messelensis Wittich 1898 ist ein Ibis

Rhynchaeites messelensis Wittich 1898 aus der „Grube Messel“ (Unteres Mittel-Eozän, Lutetium, Messel Formation) wird revidiert und ergänzend beschrieben. Da der Holotypus offenbar verloren ist, wird ein Neotypus festgelegt.Plumumida lutetialis Hoch 1980 ist jüngeres Synonym vonRh. messelensis. Aufgrund osteologischer Befunde, insbesondere des Schnabels, wirdRh. messelensis als Ibis angesprochen. Die Vermutung, daß die Threskiornithidae der „Ausgangsgruppe“ der Gruiformes und Charadriiformes nahestünden, wird durchRh. messelensis erheblich gestützt.

Rhynchaeites messelensis Wittich 1898 from “Grube Messel” (lower Middle-Eocene, Lutetian, oil-shales) is revised. Since the holotype seems to be lost a neotype is designated.Plumumida lutetialis Hoch 1980 is a synonym ofRh. messelensis. According to the construction of the bill and other skeletal features the fossil bird is placed in the Threskiornithidae. The hypothesis that Threskiornithidae are close to the group from which Gruiformes and Charadriiformes arose is corroborated strongly byRh. messelensis.
