Fear of Walking Alone at Night

Description

Since the 1960s, the fear of criminal victimization has become an increasingly prominent sociopolitical concern among researchers and policymakers alike, most notably in the United States, Britain, and Europe but progressively in developing countries too. Numerous studies have been conducted with the aim of understanding, monitoring, and evaluating fear of crime, with many concluding that “such fear continues to impinge upon the well-being of a proportion of the population” (Gilchrist, Bannister, Ditton, & Farrall, 1998p. 283). From a measurement perspective, there have been a wide array of survey questions that have been employed by researchers over the last four decades in order to examine, better understand, and monitor fear of crime. One of the earliest and most common survey questions used by researchers since the 1960s to gauge fear of crime enquires about how safe an individual feels walking about in their local area at nighttime....
