University chancellor (1937 - 2012)

Sir Brandon Charles Gough DL (8 October 1937 – 25 April 2012[1] ) was a British businessman, and Chancellor of the University of East Anglia.[2]

Charles Brandon Gough was educated at Douai School and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he read natural sciences and law. He held chairmanships of Yorkshire Water, Coopers & Lybrand and De La Rue plc, and was chairman of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. He was knighted in 2002.

Sir Brandon Gough began his professional journey at the accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand in 1964, becoming a partner by 1968. He rose to prominence in the firm and served as chairman from 1983 to 1994, overseeing its merger with Deloitte, Haskins & Sells in 1990. He later took on leadership roles across several sectors, including finance and utilities. In 1995, he became deputy chairman of S.G. Warburg Group, and from 1996 to 2000, he chaired Yorkshire Water. He also served as chairman of De La Rue plc between 1997 and 2004.

Beyond the private sector, Gough played a significant role in public service, notably as chairman of the Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration from 1993 to 2001. He was also chairman of the Higher Education Funding Council for England from 1993 to 1997, where he was instrumental in shaping policy during a period of expansion in UK higher education. For his contributions, he was knighted in 2002.[3][4]
