Han-Centric Dress: Fashion Subculture or a National Identity for China? in: Fashion: Exploring Critical Issues

Many forecasters project that Chinese trends will increasingly play a role in global fashion design as major fashion houses look eastward for inspiration. Local Chinese designers and design graduates are encouraged to embed cultural identity into their designs as a mark of distinctiveness. However, some Chinese youth think less about brands or the future of Chinese fashion, but look to its ancient past by creating fashion clubs devoted to traditional Han Chinese clothing, known as hanfu. This chapter explores the significance of the hanfu movement in Shanghai and Beijing.
