With the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, you can search for an address (geocode), reverse geocode, find candidate matches, get suggestions, and batch geocode. Geocoding is the process of converting text to an address and a location.
To perform geocoding operations, use the Search component or locator. The Directions component also uses the Search component for geocoding or reverse geocoding. Additionally, the Search component can use a geocoding service or a layer as its source.
