'Lopez Vs. Lopez' Canceled After 3 Seasons At NBC

NBC comedy Lopez vs. Lopez has been canceled after three seasons.

The news arrived Friday as the network reveals the fate of its bubble shows ahead of its upfront presentation Monday, and as they make way for NBA programming. Night Court was also canceled this morning after three seasons, alongside dramas Suits LA, The Irrational and Found.

Lopez vs. Lopez was one of the first broadcast comedies about a Latino family in the vein of other dysfunctional American families like Roseanne and The Conners from Bruce Helford, who executive produced Lopez vs. Lopez and The George Lopez Show.

Lopez vs. Lopez is a working-class family comedy about dysfunction, reconnection, and all the pain and joy in between. Starring the father-and-daughter duo George Lopez and Mayan Lopez, who co-created the series alongside Debby Wolfe, it tells the story of a working-class, old-school Latino who moves in with his modern Gen Z daughter as they rebuild their dysfunctional relationship one argument at a time.

The series was George Lopez’s most vulnerable work yet, tackling the complexities of his real-life relationship with his daughter and his mother, among other topics that have positively affected the actor and comedian’s real life. Similarly, the series and its approach to taboo topics like mental health issues, toxic masculinity and interracial relationships have helped members of the cast, crew and viewers alike.

In addition to the Lopezes, Selenis Leyva, Brice Gonzalez, Matt Shively, Al Madrigal (and Noel, the dog who plays Churro) also star.

Lopez vs. Lopez is the second series this cycle featuring an all-Latino cast to be canceled, following the upcoming conclusion of the Apple TV+ series Acapulco, from Eugenio Derbez, who stars and executive produces, after four seasons. Both shows are groundbreaking for their positive representation of Latinos, featuring unique and heartwarming stories that didn’t lean into stereotypes.

George Lopez is credited with bringing the Latino family experience to network television, first with ABC’s The George Lopez Show (2002-2007), specifically focused on a Mexican American family, and Lopez vs. Lopez, centered on a more multicultural experience, both in collaboration with Helford.

However, there are additional shows featuring Latino main characters moving forward, including NBC’s Happy’s Place, starring and executive produced by Reba McEntire, with Belissa Escobedo in a series regular role; ABC’s Will Trent, led by Ramon Rodriguez, was renewed for a fourth season; CBS’ NCIS starring Wilmer Valderrama; CBS’ Fire Country starring Kevin Alejandro and the show’s spinoff Sheriff Country which will star Morena Baccarin; and Dana Klein’s recently picked up series DMV with Gigi Zumbado in a series regular role, to name a few.

Wolfe and George Lopez executive produce Lopez vs. Lopez with Helford, Michael Rotenberg and Katie Newman. It is produced by Universal Television in association with Mohawk Productions, Travieso Productions, Mi Vida Loba and 3 Arts.
