Using the Newspapers.com Map Feature

Have you ever browsed through available newspapers using the Newspapers.com map feature? The map allows you to see what newspapers are available by zooming into a specific area. This can be very helpful as city and county lines tended to change over time, and if your ancestor lived near a state line or country border, you may find them mentioned in papers from that nearby state or country.

To access the map, look for the “Search” button at the top of the homepage. When you click on “Search,” you will see the option to “Browse” through papers. Select “Browse” and then click on the “Browse by map” option on the top right-hand of the page.

This brings up the map page. Pins on the map indicate there are newspapers available from that location. Next, zoom into your area of interest. In this example, you will see 103 papers available in the Buffalo, New York, area. About 20 miles away is Niagara Falls, ON, Canada, with an additional 61 papers. People from this area were commonly mentioned in newspapers in both locations.

Clicking on a pin will list the papers available in that location. These are links that will take you directly to the paper’s page.

If you haven’t searched using the map feature, give it a try and see if you can uncover any hidden gems in your research. Search Newspapers.com today!
