Beginners Guide to Stope Mining

Stoping is the method used in mining operations of extracting ore and waste rock from underground mines that create openings called stopes.

There are several types of stoping that vary based on the mining techniques used to move ore and waste throughout the stope.

Stoping occurs in two steps: developing the ore blocks to prepare them, and then production, where extractions commence.

In stoping, shafts are dug vertically until the ore is reached. Then, based on carefully preplanned designs, large horizontal tunnels are created.

Miners work from this area, the stope, to extract the desired ore.

A mine typically has multiple levels of stopes accessible from the same vertical shaft.

Stoping methods can be used when the geological structure of the rock is strong to support the stope.

In most cases, artificial supports will also be added but the strength of the rock mass is important nevertheless.

Stoping limits the effects on the surface and increased how sustainable mines.

They are also cost-effective methods and are widely used throughout the industry.
