Tuesday, December 20 Afternoon Forecast Discussion

An unusual weather phenomenon across central Mississippi this morning as some freezing fog was reported in Louisville and essentially lake effect snow around the Ross Barnett Reservoir in the Jackson metro. It appears moisture arrived from the east overnight and temperatures remained cold enough for the freezing fog north Louisville and a warm enough lake for snow showers near Jackson. The associated clouds have been slow to clear today, as we are really just now seeing that this afternoon, and we will keep some clouds around overnight as temperatures drop to near the freezing mark.

Winter officially starts at 4:44am, although it is not going to feel like winter for a while as highs will be near 60 for the rest of the week and lows warming into the 40s and 50s.

A massive ridge begins to build into the region this weekend to allow temperatures to make it to the lower and middle 70s as we move through Christmas Day and the day after Christmas. Our next system looks to be deflected mostly to our north as the ridge remains in place, but the cold front will arrive Monday into Tuesday to bring us what looks like isolated showers at best. Highs look to remain above average as we close out the year.
