Thus, catching the soul of Chinese calligraphy requires understanding the literary contents. To facilitate this, the Calligraphy Meets Philosophy series presents traditional Chinese calligraphy alongside line-by-line translated texts with remarks and footnotes.
Calligraphy Meets Philosophy â Talk 1 (ã å°èªâ第ä¸è©± ã) includes three calligraphic works and their translations: Heart Sutra (ãè¬è¥æ³¢ç¾ èå¤å¿ç¶ã), Great Learning (ã大å¸ã), and Zhuangzi - The Secret of Caring for Life (ãèåâé¤ç主ã). It also includes Revisions to âAn English Translation and the Correct Interpretation of Laoziâs Tao Te Chingâ.

Translation (revised Aug. 2022)
The original classical Chinese of Great Learning and its text arrangement below follow Zhu Xiâs (æ±ç¹) venerable Commentaries on the Four Books (ã忏鿳¨ã)(1). Hence, the order of the paragraphs is slightly different than that seen in Lijiâs (ã ç¦®è¨ ã).
This English translation amends numerous common misinterpretations in other English interpretations, including that by the revered James Legge(2) and two online renditions by A. Charles Mueller and Robert Eno(3). With clear and concise language, it aims to facilitate a correct understanding of this foundational Confucian text.

The Fundamental Way (é) of the Great Learning is to enlighten (æ) oneâs inherent splendid virtue (æå¾·), to revitalize (親,æ°)(4) the people, and to continuously pursue these endeavours until one rests and resides (æ¢) in the highest level of excellence (è³å).
1. 大å¸ä¹éï¼å¨ææå¾·ï¼å¨è¦ªæ°ï¼å¨æ¢æ¼è³åã
With knowing what to pursue and where to ultimately rest in, one then (å) has steadfast determination (å®). With steadfast determination, one then can (è½) be in a state of unmoved tranquillity (é). With unmoved tranquillity, one then can be at ease (å®) under any circumstance. With being at ease under any circumstance, one then can deliberate (æ ®) with great care. With deliberating with great care, one then can attain (å¾) the highest excellence.
2. ç¥æ¢èåæå®ï¼å®èåè½éï¼éèåè½å®ï¼å®èåè½æ ®ï¼æ ®èåè½å¾ã
All things have their respective foundations (æ¬) and ramifications (æ«); all affairs have their own conclusions (çµ) and beginnings (å§). If one knows which comes before and which comes after, then one shall not be far from The Fundamental Way (é) of the Great Learning.
3. ç©ææ¬æ«ï¼äºæçµå§ï¼ç¥æå å¾ï¼åè¿éç£ã
Those in the past who wished (欲) to enlighten the inherent splendid virtues throughout (æ¼) all under Heaven first governed (æ²») their states (å) well. Those who wished to govern their states well first brought good order (é½) to their families. Those who wished to bring good order to their own families first cultivated (ä¿®) their own selves. Those who wished to cultivate their own selves first brought about propriety (æ£) in their minds (å¿). Those who wished to bring about propriety (æ£) in their minds first developed honesty and sincerity (èª ) in their thoughts (æ). Those who wished to develop honesty and sincerity in their thoughts first pursued their knowledge (ç¥) to the utmost degree (è´). To pursue knowledge to the utmost degree lies in examing all matters and principles to the greatest extent (æ ¼ç©).

When all matters and principles have been examined to the greatest extent, then oneâs knowledge can be pursued to the utmost degree. When oneâs knowledge has been pursued to the utmost degree, then oneâs thoughts can develop honesty and sincerity. When oneâs thoughts have developed honesty and sincerity, then one can bring about propriety in oneâs mind. When one has brought about propriety in oneâs mind, then one can cultivate oneâs own self. When one has cultivated oneâs own self, then one can bring good order to oneâs own family. When one has brought good order to oneâs own family, then one can govern the state well. When one has governed the state well, one can then rule and settle all under Heaven.

From the Son of Heaven to the ordinary layman, everyone (壹) takes the cultivation of oneself as oneâs foundation. For one to have a disorderly (äº) foundation yet end up (æ«) to govern well is not possible indeed (ç£). What one considers very important (å), yet one takes it lightly (è); what one considers trivial (è), yet one takes it with great importance (å); such instances never existed. This is called knowing oneâs foundation; this is called pursuing knowledge to the utmost degree.
