DETROIT, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Stevens T. Mason, the first governor of Michigan, was reburied in Detroit on the 199th anniversary of his birthday.

Michigan Historical Center Director Sandra Clark said the burial, in the city's Capitol Park, marks the fourth time Mason has been buried since his death in 1843 at the age of 31, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

Michigan State Capitol historian Kerry Chartkoff said Mason was first appointed acting governor of Michigan territory when he was 19, and he was elected the state's first governor in 1835 when he was 24, making him the youngest governor in the history of the nation.

Robert Mason, 42, the official's great-great-great-grandnephew, was present during the burial ceremony.

Chartkoff said the governor's remains were moved from an underground site at the park to an aboveground concrete vault to give him more prominence at the park.
