According to the inscription in the upper panel, this painting depicts the Safavid ruler ShÄh Ê¿AbbÄs I (r. 996 AH / 1588 CE -- 1038 AH / 1629 CE). It was likely produced in India in the twelfth century AH / eighteenth CE. The Safavid ruler is shown in a stylized landscape. On the verso of the leaf is a sample of calligraphy in nastaÊ¿lÄ«q script quoting verses by the Persian poet SaÊ¿dÄ« ShÄ«rÄzÄ« (d. 691 AH / 1292 CE). These verses were executed in Samarqand by Muḥammad AmÄ«n ibn BÄbÄ JÄn in 990 AH / 1582-3 CE.
