She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fidelis Korbe, in 1938; her second AVIATION Museum F-14 Fighter-bomber plane flown to its final resting place By The Associated Press TOPEKA The two Navy officers climbed out of the F-14 Tomcat they had just landed at Forbes Field, talked to some spectators and then paused to do something unusual to the jet.

They autographed it. Lt. Cmdr. Marcell Padilla and Cmdr. Dave Asjes had just flown the fighterbomber on its final mission, delivering it from Fallon Navy Base in Nevada to Forbes Field, where it will soon go on display in the Combat Air Museum.

The F-14 that pilot Padilla and radar intercept officer Asjes landed at Forbes Field was the last one based at Fallon, the rest having been sent to other museums or to aircraft graveyards. Seven F-14 squadrons remain operating, some in combat, Padilla said. But the aircraft, which made its first combat cruise in September 1974, is scheduled to be retired in 2006 and replaced by the twin-engine Super Hornet. Irreplaceable To Padilla, however, the Tomcat can never be precisely replaced. He has flown Tomcats for most of his 14-year career and considers it "an excellent air-toair, air-to-ground (firing) platform." Padilla said he thought he recognized the F-14 he flew into Topeka as having been assigned to a squadron aboard a carrier on which he served.

He flew 33 combat missions off a carrier in 55 days in Kosovo and took off from PRISON SYSTEM Hostage prompts Officials to review security after nurse was taken hostage By The Associated Press LAWRENCE A review of security procedures at the Douglas County Jail is under way after an inmate took a nurse hostage and demanded his release in exchange for freeing the woman. The inmate, whose name was withheld pending completion of an investigation, released the nurse unharmed Thursday night after a standoff that lasted about half an hour. Sheriff Rick Trapp said the inmate took the nurse hostage as she dispensed medicine in the maximum-security section of the 196-bed jail. He would not say whether the inmate used any type of weapon. The inmate was returned to his cell after a sergeant at the jail talked the man into letting the nurse go.

No force was used to end the standoff. Marcell Padilla Navy pilot the carrier USS Enterprise to fly eight combat missions in Afghanistan. Asjes called the F-14 "a great machine." "It has a combination of speed and payload that nothing else matches," he said. National museum loaner Combat Air Museum curator Danny San Romani said the fighter-bomber was loaned by the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, after repeated requests by CAM wing commander Dick Trupp. About 30 spectators, most of them museum volunteers or members, were on hand as the Tomcat screamed over Forbes Field and made several touch-and-go landings between passes before landing for good. The aerial activity was necessary to burn off fuel so the jet's tanks would be as empty as possible.

After stopping near the museum hangar, the fighter was towed to a secure area on the base, where fuel and hydraulic fluid will be drained, its engines will be stripped out and explosive charges designed to eject the pilots will be removed, San Romani said. That three- to five-day process will begin Tuesday, and San Romani said he hoped the Tomcat would be on public display by Nov. 3. "I'm pleased with the way the officers handled the immediate situation, but I still have concerns as to why it happened in the first place." Rick Trapp Douglas County sheriff the first place," said Trapp, who ordered an immediate review of security procedures. Administrators of the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association, which provides the jail with four full-time nurses, also were reviewing procedures.

Jan Jenkins, the association's director, said the nurse who was taken hostage had been trained to work with inmates. She also said the nurse was following the organization's policies and procedures as she made her rounds Thursday night, distributing medication.
