Third baseman Nick Castellanos had proven all he needed to prove in Single-A ball, so the Detroit Tigers presented him with a new challenge.
That's the basic reason
after he went 2-for-4 for Lakeland on Monday to improve his average to .405.
"He is hitting .400 at this time, and we felt it was the right time to move him," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said via text message Tuesday morning. "He is ready for the next challenge."
Castellanos leads the Florida State League in batting average, hits (87), total bases (119), on-base percentage (.461), slugging percentage (.553) and OPS (1.014). He is tied for second in doubles (17) and third in runs scored (37).
His numbers this season are much-improved over those he posted in 2011 with Single-A West Michigan. He hit .312 with a .367 on-base percentage, a .436 slugging percentage and an OPS of .803 last season before being moved up to Lakeland this season.
Castellanos, who turned 20 during spring training, is listed at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. Fans have questioned whether the Tigers should move him to another position since the Tigers have Miguel Cabrera at third base. If Castellanos eventually makes a move to another position, it would likely be to the outfield and not to another spot on the infield.
But Dombrowski said Castellanos is not going anywhere for now.
"Right now, he is going to play third base," he said.
