David James Robert Simson - The Dreadnought Project
Captain David James Robert Simson (7 September, 1892 – 23 May, 1940) was an officer in the Royal Navy. His career would feature an unusual number of appointments in command of a fighting ship, including 19 commands of destroyers and flotilla leaders.
Life & Career
The son of barrister James Simson, David Simson gained one month's time on passing out of the Training Establishment in January, 1910. He served in Russell, Lancaster and Lion, leaving the last ship for examinations in January, 1913.[1]
Simson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1915.[2]
He was appointed to the battleship King George V on 15 January, 1915 and fought in her at the Battle of Jutland. He continued to serve in King George V until being appointed to Petard on 22 May, 1917.[3]
Simson was appointed in command of the destroyer Usk on 17 March, 1918.[4]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Hind in November, 1918.[5]
In January, 1920, Simson was appointed in command of the destroyer Spear.[6]
Simson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 January, 1923. In April 1925, he passed a Gyrocompass course with 89 of 150 marks.[7]
Simson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1928.[8]
Simson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1936.[9]
Simson was appointed to the netlayer Protector on 11 December, 1936, to assume command upon her commissioning. A Court of Enquiry assigned some blame to Simson for H.M.S. Hood having straddled H.M.S. Protector during full calibre firing on 30 June, 1937. He was told by C-in-C Mediterranean that he was expected to exercise greater initiative in future.[10]
World War II
Simson was appointed in command of the "B" Class destroyer leader Keith on 15 February, 1940. He would die in that ship on 23 May, 1940 when she was struck by mortar and machine gun fire from German land forces while loading British troops to be evacuated in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
