Operational research (OR), also called operations research, applies systematic analytic techniques to improve decision-making. The terms analytics, management science, and operations management are commonly used interchangeably with OR. OR is found anywhere decisions must be made: transportation, logistics, telecommunications, healthcare, environment, finance, energy, and more.
OR uses math, computing, engineering, and business skills to develop efficient and effective solutions to both small and large problems. Careers in OR span a wide variety of industries, the most common of which are supply chain management, logistics, telecommunications, healthcare, government, academia, military, and energy. Operations researchers generally are strong in both quantitative and interpersonal skills.
