Specialist in astronautics and liquid rocket engine technology. Born in Ningguo, Anhui Province. Undertook his undergraduate study in Nanjing Central University in 1934. Graduated from the National Institute of Technology, Ministry of Military Administration, Chongqing in 1940. Received MS in 1946 and Ph.D. in 1949 from the University of Michigan, USA. Research professor and senior technological advisor, China Aerospace Corporation.

Ren took charge of the long-term planning and technology development programs of liquid rocket engines. He led and participated in the development of several liquid rocket engine projects, and overcame a number of critical technical difficulties including instability combustion. He led and participated in the development and testing of several types of ballistic missiles. He took charge of the development of Long March-1 launch vehicle which was used for the successful launch of China's first satellite DFH-1. He served as the chief designer of the Testing Communication Satellite Project. He led and participated in the development of Long March-3 launch vehicle, and successfully launched China's first geosynchronous satellite DFH-2 and Asia 1 communication satellite by Long March-3. He took charge of the Fengyun meteorological satellite project and the testing, successful launch and operation of two other scientific satellites. He has made important contributions to the development of China's Astronautical cause.

He was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980.
