Use themes to change the look of Firefox

A theme is a type of Firefox add-on that changes the visual appearance of Firefox. This article describes how to find, install and manage themes in Firefox.

What are themes?

A theme changes the appearance of Firefox, such as the color scheme and background image of the toolbars. The color scheme of menus and built-in pages will follow, based on whether the text color on your toolbar is light or dark. Some websites also will follow the same color scheme.

Firefox comes with a default System theme and optional Colorways, Light, Dark, and Alpenglow themes, but you can always install new themes.

Installing themes
  1. Click the menu button , click and select .
  2. Scroll through the suggested themes or visit addons.mozilla.org to browse more themes.
  3. Click on the theme's author to see more information about it.
  4. Click the + Install Theme button.
Firefox will download the requested theme and may notify you that it has been installed.

Note: If you simply want to change the color scheme, Colorways by Firefox is a collection of themes you can choose from.

You can also install Mozilla's Firefox Color extension to change the color of tabs and toolbars, add a custom background, and more. See the Firefox Color Homepage for details.

Managing themes

Click the menu button , click and select .

Reset theme to default
  1. Click the menu button , click and select .
  2. Click Disable. The default System theme will be enabled.
Switch themes
  1. Click the menu button , click and select .
  2. Scroll through the list of themes.
  3. Click Enable to use that theme.
Remove themes

Note: You cannot remove themes that come with Firefox (System, Light, Dark and Alpenglow themes), but you can disable them by switching themes or resetting the theme to the default (see above).

To remove an installed theme that you previously added to Firefox:

  1. Click the menu button , click and select .
  2. Click the ellipsis (3-dot) icon that displays for the theme that you want to remove and then select Remove.

Note: If you remove the Enabled theme, the default System theme will become enabled.

If you are not able to remove a theme, see Cannot remove an add-on (extension or theme).
