graduate DuBose, Laurance Toombs (1893-1967)"Larry" DuBose was captain of the Portland during the invasion of Guadalcanal and was present at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, where his ship inflicted serious damage on Hiei in spite of a torpedo hit that jammed her steering and sent her into endless circles. He was later promoted to rear admiral and commanded bombardment forces at Tarawa and throughout the rest of the Central Pacific campaign. He escorted the crippled cruisers Houston and Canberra out of the danger zone following the Formosa raids of October 1944 and he also commanded the cruiser force that Halsey left behind to clean up Ozawa's Mobile Fleet after Halsey was recalled to San Bernardino Straits during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Though a capable surface commander, awarded the Navy Cross three times during the war, DuBose was realistic enough to work amicably under junior aviator carrier task force commanders.
