1984-85 Women's Track & Field

From the Tallahassee Democrat, March 10, 1985, page 51.

FSU wins women's NCAA.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Florida State took only six women to the NCAA indoor championships this weekend - but those six won the national championship.

Esmeralda Garcia broke her own world indoor record in the triple jump and Michelle Finn won the 55-yard bash to lead the Lady Seminoles. FSU won the title with 34 points, two more than the University of Texas.

"We're kind of numb right now," FSU Coach Gary Winckler said. "You don't bring six athletes to a national championship and win unless they all perform incredibly."

All six became All-Americans by finishing in the top six in the meet, held at the Carrier Dome.

FSU adds the indoor title to the outdoor title it won last June. In the men's indoor meet, FSU failed to place any athletes in the finals as Arkansas won its second consecutive national championship.

Garcia, who came into the meet as the nation's top triple-jumper, set a world indoor best of 44 feet, 4 inches. Earlier in the day, she finished third in the long jump with her season's best of 20-9.

"What Esmeralda Garcia did was an incredible feat in the triple jump alone - and for her to do so well in the long jump as well…" Winckler said.

Finn, a sophomore, won the 55-meter dash in 6.75, one-hundredth of a second better than Gwen Torrence of Georgia. "We knew how good she was, but she rocked everybody in the NCAA," Winckler said.

Also critical for the FSU team was Nancy Rettie's third-place finish in the 1,000 meters and the fifth-place finish of the 4x800-meter relay team.

Kelly Hackler and Chris McKay were the first two runners on the relay team. Then Rettie ran her leg in 2:06, pushing the team from eighth to third, and Brenda Moore, a freshman from Texas, ran a 2:12 anchor leg.

Only 80 minutes later, Rettie came back to finish third in the 1,000 meters in 2:43.08.

Rettie "passed five people on her third leg … and really pulled us into the 4x800, then Brenda Moore did a really outstanding job in a pressure situation," Winckler said.

The Lady Seminoles finished fourth in the NCAA indoor track meet last year.

Tennessee finished a distant second in the men's team standings with 29 points.
