Facilities
The Department of Music maintains highly sophisticated facilities for music creation, instruction and performance, including:
- Conrad Prebys Concert Hall - Designed by famed acoustician Cyril M. Harris, this 350-seat concert hall is a world-class venue for contemporary chamber and small ensemble music.
- Conrad Prebys Music Center Experimental Theater - a 150-seat concert and theatrical space with a “black box” design, featuring a configurable room acoustic made possible by Meyer Sound’s Constellation electroacoustic architecture.
- Conrad Prebys Music Center Recital Hall - a 150-seat auditorium designed for intimate performances and lectures with the added functionality of surround sound diffusion when desired.
- Mandeville Auditorium - An 800-seat hall that was fully renovated in 2018, Mandeville Auditorium is suitable for a full range of events, from dance, music, and theatrical productions to conferences, lectures, and other special events. Visit mandeville.ucsd.edu to learn more.
- Two state-of-the-art recording facilities, one located in the Warren Music Center and one located in the Conrad Prebys Music Center, designed to support faculty, graduate, and undergraduate research.
- Four smaller project studios in the Conrad Prebys Music Center designed for students to do recording, mixing, mastering, and computer music work. These rooms feature 8-channel mixers, digital audio interfaces, and computers outfitted with an array of music software, including current versions of ProTools, Max/MSP/Jitter, and Pure Data.
- An Instructional Computing Laboratory with Mac workstations (with software such as Sibelius, Logic, Ableton Live, Adobe CS, Max/MSP/Jitter, Soundhack, and Pure Data), MIDI keyboard controllers, and a laptop work area.
- Several classroom spaces capable of multi-channel surround sound audio diffusion.
All faculty and most student concerts are recorded by professional staff or their assistants. Graduate students may apply for staff positions and recording project support at Warren Music Center Studios, and ICAM majors may apply for engineering and production internship credits.
Geisel Library develops and maintains extensive digital and physical collections of materials in all areas of music and music scholarship (and especially in contemporary and experimental forms), as well as spaces and equipment to support media listening and viewing.
