Safari does complain when I try to acccess a site with a self-signed certificate, and even on one with a valid cert signed by a dutch CA (an affiliate of verisign). I do find it pretty annoying that safari won't tell me the details of a cert or why it doesn't trust a cert. I'd file a bugreport if the safari key verification isn't good enough.
