installed glibc v2.2 and still get LONG_BIT error

Hi,
I pulled down the rpms for glibc-2.2-12 from Redhat and
did an update. I check to see if it was installed, thinks
look ok. Did a make clean., removed config.cache, and then
did ./configure followed by make. I'm still getting the LONG_BIT
error. I did and rpm -q on the package and it show glibc v2.2
installed. Is there anything  else I should have done?
