Yes.

I think someone's done that, but I've never used it or even looked for it.

If nobody's done it yet, and you want it, talk for a while and find other
people who share your want (it can't be a rare desire), and work together
on an extension.  vim can be scripted in Python, Perl, and several other
languages.
