As Brett suggested, I've just run the benchmarks suite with memory 
tracking on.  The results are here:

Looks like the memory increase is around 1%.

One synthetic micro-benchmark, unpack_sequence, contains hundreds of 
lines that load a global variable and does nothing else, consumes 5%.
