We're all learning, even the ones who have used Mercurial before (which isn't me). I have been avoiding hg import because my understanding is that it defaults to commit, and I don't see that it has any advantage over patch itself. If export preserves the commit message (I haven't tried export, didn't even know it existed), then that could indeed be a better way to go for this particular scenario.
