In general, when I say that x and y are equivalent (or interchangeable), I
mean that in any context in which x appears can use y instead with the same
effect.

In the context of this particular discussion, I am talking about two objects
being equivalent (in the sense above) in any program that does not directly
determine the identity of those objects.
