That's kind of a loaded question.  I don't think that this simpler 
syntax is "near useless."  It fulfills pretty much all of the problems 
that the original PEP aimed to fix.  And, I don't mean to be rude, but 
yes the @syntax is that horrible.

I used them enough to write the PEP in the first place, and I would use 
them even more if there were a better syntax for them.
