For what it's worth, my hammer_bsddb script that Tim mentioned, at http://mail.python.org/pipermail/spambayes-dev/2003-July/000524.html seems more often than not to provoke an application error when there's background load, and a DBRunRecoveryError when there isn't. I don't have a source build of Python at the moment, but if no-one else can reproduce the problem then I can check one out (SF permitting 8-) and try to find out where it's crashing.
