OK, here's what I've been able to find so far.
It fails at the point in the installation process where it is trying to do this:
$ CC='gcc' LDSHARED='gcc -shared' OPT='-DNDEBUG -g -O3 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes' ./python -E ./setup.py build
