It seems a good measure of how long it takes to make a trip around the eval loop, though. Marc-Andre Lemburg put together a much fancier suite, that times a wide variety of basic Python operations and constructs more-or-less in isolation from each other. It can be very helpful in pinpointing specific timing regressions. That's it.
