The countdown for the end of ESPN's Mike and Mike is officially on.
The two will part ways after nearly two decades together on November 17, the network announced on Monday morning. Before then, viewers can see a preview of Mike Golic's new morning drive show with co-host Trey Wingo on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week when Wingo takes over for Mike Greenberg in the Mike and Mike spot. Greenberg will be guest hosting The Michael Kay Show on those days.
The official break-up date comes two months after the network announced the two were splitting up -- following months of rumors and reports that the days of their popular show were limited. "Am I allowed to tweet that you guys are idiots now," Golic's son, Jake, tweeted at ESPN the time (the tweet was later deleted). "Or do I need to wait a year to announce that?"
In a statement released by ESPN at the time, Mike Golic was more upbeat.
“With Mike & Mike ending later this year, I am looking forward to the opportunity to begin the next chapter of the ESPN morning show with Trey and my son Mike,” he said. “Both men will bring new and interesting voices to our morning conversations and help to create a fresh fun show for our audience. I appreciate the loyalty of those who have started their mornings with us over the years and hope they continue to do so for years to come.”
Publicly, the two have spoken numerous times since that announcement about their mutual affection for each other and have batted down reports that they're no longer on speaking terms and that the atmosphere around the show was poisonous.
“We’ve been together a long time and we’ve had a very close-knit staff over the years. We’ve had people work with us and most of them have been with us for years and years and years,” Greenberg told The New York Post last month. “So, if there are people that are talking anonymously about us, then sure, that would bother me, too. Absolutely, no question. So I agree with Mike completely.”
Golic & Wingo will premiere on November 27.
