The world’s most valuable technology company says the new in-car technology enables iPhone users to connect their smartphone to the dashboard technology from more than a dozen different auto manufacturers, including Ford, BMW and General Motors.

The technology, which was unveiled Monday at the Geneva International Motor Show, is designed to give users access to iPhone functions — including the ability to make calls, send text messages, play music and access Apple’s Maps software — using Siri voice commands or the car’s in-dash touchscreen.

Apple’s in-car technology could prove to be a positive move for BlackBerry Ltd., as software developed by the Waterloo, Ont.-based company’s subsidiary QNX Software Systems will support CarPlay technology.

QNX is the market leader in operating system platforms for automotive infotainment systems, with a market share above 50%, according to data from market research firm IHS Automotive, and the company counts Apple among its clients.

“Connectivity to smartphones and other mobile devices is a key strength of QNX Software Systems’ platform for car infotainment systems, and many automakers and tier one automotive suppliers use our platform to implement smartphone/head-unit integration in their vehicles,” said Paul Leroux, a spokesman for QNX Software Systems.

“We have a long-standing partnership with Apple to ensure high-quality connectivity with their devices, and this partnership extends to support for Apple CarPlay.”

QNX provides its operating system platform technology to many of the world’s largest auto makers, including those working with Apple on CarPlay, such as Ford, BMW, Honda, General Motors, and Toyota.

Apple’s announcement comes one week after shares of BlackBerry spiked on reports that Ford may stop using Microsoft Corp.’s software to power the automaker’s “Sync” technology — which allows drivers to connect their mobile phones to the car’s onboard computer and control certain hands free functions — in favour of moving to QNX, the software platform owned by the Canadian smartphone maker.

Apple said that in cars using CarPlay, drivers will be able to access the company’s Siri voice-recognition technology via a button on the steering wheel.

According to a press release, the list of auto manufacturers that plan to offer Apple’s CarPlay technology includes: BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.

“CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing, said in a statement.

“iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction. We have an amazing lineup of auto partners rolling out CarPlay, and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.”

Apple said that CarPlay will be available as an update to iOS 7 and will work with smartphones that support Apple’s Lightning connectors, namely the iPhone 5s, 5c and iPhone 5. The first cars to support CarPlay are expected to begin shipping this year.
