Penn State football program ranks No. 1 in New America Foundation's Academic Bowl Championship Series

Good news has been hard to come by for the Penn State football team lately.

It got some Wednesday.

An analysis conducted by the New America Foundation said the Penn State football program is No. 1 in the country in this year’s Academic Bowl Championship Series.

Penn State received a final score of 117, which is 10 points higher than the next best school, Boise State. The Nittany Lions’ opponent in the TicketCity Bowl, Houston, ranked No. 23 with a score of 30.

Penn State came in first place in 2009 and third place in 2008. The analysis ranks the 25 BCS teams and sees how they stack up academically.

According to the NAF’s Higher Ed Watch blog, the Academic BCS is determined from each football teams’ academic success in relation to other programs and other students at their own school.

The numbers show that Penn State graduates 80 percent of its players in six years or less

According to Higher Ed Watch, here are some of the factors that go into the rankings:

1. The football team’s graduation rate relative to the school overall

2. The difference between black and white graduation rates on the team

3. The difference between black and white graduation rates at the school overall

4. The difference between the graduation rates of black players on the football team and the school’s overall black student population
