A groundbreaking ceremony five months after construction of the new Meadowlands Stadium began makes about as much sense as a retirement party for Tiki Barber at the upcoming home opener. But it's a publicity thing and I've already provided some with that wise remark, so go with me on this.
All the dignitaries were there today: Gov. Corzine, State Senate President Richard Codey, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Rutgers AD Bob Mulcahy, Jets owner Woody Johnson, Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch and more elected officials.I love events like this because everybody tries to overstate everything. And the winner of today's ridiculous overstatement award was Corzine, who said the new stadium will stand "for tens and tens of decades." As Kenny Palmer of "The Giant Insider" immediately noted, that means at least 200 years. Wow, this is going to be some facility.
And the winner for the quote that actually made me laugh was NFL Network host Rich Eisen, who emceed the event. As he introduced Corzine, Eisen mentioned there will be Light Rail access to the stadium, "which we hope Governor Corzine will take."
I had to sneak away for practice so I didn't catch all of the details, though Codey did say the Giants will be training here in the summers instead of in Albany -- which seemed to catch Mara by surprise because that hadn't been announced yet and may not be official, either. But I do have some images of the new digs for you, though I'm having trouble uploading them right now. I'll keep trying.

Practice is underway and FB Robert Douglas (knee), LB Gerris Wilkinson (knee) and WR David Tyree (wrist) were not participating. CB Sam Madison was doing individual drills. He and LB Kawika Mitchell (groin) and T Guy Whimper (ankle) were listed as limited in the pre-practice injury report. WR Plaxico Burress (back), DE Adrian Awasom (hip), CB Kevin Dockery (hamstring) and OL Grey Ruegamer were listed as fully participating. We'll get a full report after from coach Tom Coughlin.
UPDATE: Mitchell and Madison both practiced fully. That's good news because the Giants need Madison out there on Sunday night.
