Throughout May, the ACGME will share tools, resources, podcasts, and more to help Sponsoring Institutions and programs provide mental health and well-being support for residents, fellows, and all those who work in graduate medical education.

The ACGME provides a variety of tools, courses, and other materials to help faculty members better assess residents and fellows and provide meaningful feedback.

The Value of Accreditation

The ACGME’s accreditation model and processes ensure and improve the quality of graduate medical education in the United States. This in turn assures the public that today’s residents and fellows are learning and training in a setting that is preparing them to deliver safe, high-quality medical care today and in their future practice.

Are all residency and fellowship programs in the US ACGME-accredited?

No. ACGME accreditation is a voluntary process programs and the institutions that sponsor them choose to complete. There are residency and fellowship programs that are not accredited by the ACGME. In some cases, this is because the ACGME does not yet accredit a particular specialty or subspecialty. In other cases, programs and/or institutions have opted not to apply for accreditation from the ACGME. Residency programs that are not accredited by the ACGME do not receive Medicare funding from CMS for Direct Graduate Medical Education (DGME) and Indirect Medical Education (IME).

Does the ACGME accredit US medical schools?
